A pack of all trades

It's a tricky business, picking the right size day pack but if you're only going to keep one in your gear cupboard then this versatile 28-litre Patagonia Terravia could well be it. It'll swallow up all your hiking essentials, plus the extra food and emergency kit that you might need for bigger days in more challenging environments. Unlike the smaller Terravia models, this one features a lid rather than a zip top, plus a really useful front stuff pocket in addition to the two side bottle pockets. They've also bulked up the padding on the hip belt, helping you to carry slightly heavier loads in comfort. In fact, comfort is the hallmark of Patagonia's Terravia range. The padded back panel and shoulder straps both feature highly breathable airmesh, and there's an adjustable sternum strap to get the fit just right. Add in an integrated rain cover and trekking pole loops, and you're set for some fantastic days on the hill.

    How to Measure Torso:

    1. Grab a measuring tape and a buddy. Tuck your chin down and feel for the large bone at the base of your neck. This is the top of your torso measurement.
    2. Find the top of your hip bones. Find the middle point between these two on your lower back. This is the bottom of your torso measurement.
    3. While standing up straight, have a friend measure between the two points to find your correct pack size.

    How to Measure Hips/Waist:

    • 1. Find the top of your hip bones. Use that as your starting point, then wrap the measuring tape around your waist, staying close to the top of your hip bones.

  • Patagonia is the brand that other gear companies want to be when they grow up. In 2022, the company's founder, Yvon Chouinard, famously gave the company to the planet. Its now jointly controlled by a charitable trust and a not-for-profit dedicated to fighting the climate crisis, and all post-operating profits go to environmental causes.

But in some ways thats the tip of the (melting) iceberg. For nearly half a century, Patagonia has been an experiment in responsible business. From the farms that grow their cotton to the factories that make their goods and everything in-between, theyve tried incredibly hard to set the gold standard in terms of ethics, transparency and social responsibility. Not only that, but their gear is made to last to take hard use and repairs, and to maintain its performance through thick and thin.

All of which is even more extraordinary when you consider that Yvon Chouinard started out blacksmithing climbing gear for his mates in his parents' backyard, using a forge and anvil that he bought from a junkyard.

At WildBounds we dont usually tend to go for the big-name brands, but this was one we simply couldnt resist. Quite apart from their amazing ethical and environmental credentials, they just make great gear. Weve used it and loved it for years, and you will too.
